Spirituality and action: acting from the depths

How can I use all my strength to work for a humane and sustainable world? How can I draw orientation, strength, motivation and perseverance from spiritual depth? For me, action and contemplation are an important unity, a balance. The artist, goldsmith, theologian and mystic Joshua Boesch has inspired me again and again to go deep. The icon on the left side, “The Tightrope walker” of Josua Boesch and my Scuplture on the right side, “Globalance”, show different perspectives of life and society in balance. A conference on 15.11.2022 in the protestant Kappel Monastery/Conference Center in Switzerland on the occasion of his 100th birthday was a strong source of inspiration.

For the mystic Josua Boesch (1922-2012), word and image formed an inseparable unity. His texts and icons draw from a depth that still inspires today. He is known as a modern mystic as well as a creator of metal icons and translator of biblical texts into the Zurich dialect. The Reformed pastor and trained goldsmith created a body of work that feeds on the Gospel, silence and contemplation and has lost none of its fascination to this day. Joshua Boesch also influenced me for my Creationart.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, an anthology has been published by authors from Reformed, Catholic and Orthodox Eastern Church perspectives, which traces Joshua Boesch’s path of silence. The contributions take a look at an ecumenically open spirituality from a theological, psychological and personal perspective, which more and more people are looking for. I was allowed to contribute to this work with my own contribution.

The book was presented at the symposium “Dawn of a New World?” on 15 November in Kappel Monastery. Together with Simon Peng-Keller, Pierre Bühler, Miroslav Simjionovic and Ulrike Schatzmann, I went on the trail of Josua Boesch.
