I held a masterclass session within the anti-corruption train-the-trainer programme “Preventing and Investigating Corruption” of the Global Infrastructure Anti-Corruption Centre, the Committee on Anti-Corruption of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and the Globethics MENA Centre Tunis on 6th November 2024.
My session was entitled “We do not give up: values and old-new strategies of reducing corruption for the next decade”. I spoke about the crisis of trust, the issue of integrity from me to we, about responsibility ans accountability and about values, the relationality and balance. My lesson included insights into different levels of ethics and old and new anti-corruption strategies. It ended with a self-assessment of seven sets of personal questions.
Ethics as values-driven behaviour has a price. One cannot be ethical without being ready to pay a price in situations where we have to decide between a benefit like power or money and my values. The price can be not to get or accept a position, to be discredited by fake news or to be confronted by financial losses or missed gains. But in the end, reputation by integrity is the greatest asset a person has.
The session was one of 16 online masterclasses that are being held between October 2024 to June 2025. Sessions include the discussion, why infrastructure projects are prone to corruption, deal with values and strategies of reducing corruption for the next decade, give an overview of measuring corruption and introduce best practices in the detection and proof of wrongdoing.
